Rony Afif, amazing, talented Dubai musician and all round nice guy, commissioned me to do some portrait photos for him last month. I first heard him play jazz standards with his equally talented brother Elie at the Fridge concert series over a year ago was hooked. I’ve subsequently photographed him playing his regular gig at the Blue Bar.

Are you completely daunted by all the settings on your new DSLR camera? Not sure where to start?

Or have you been shooting on Auto and are keen to explore the possibilities and use your camera to its full potential?

This intro to digital shooting with Dubai pro photographer Tiffany Schultz will teach you the nuts and bolts of digital photography and will show you, in a very practical, hands-on way, how to take better photographs.

You will learn to take control over your camera’s settings and use them to creative effect, become familiar with technical jargon and get comfortable with your camera’s controls and menus. We will analyse each others’ work to discover what it is that makes a good photograph and how we can apply those principles to our own work.

The class size is small allowing for individual attention and being spread over 4 weeks, it allows you to absorb what is learned, practice and get feedback. There is a balance between classroom lecturing, interactive discussion, critique and practical application of the concepts learned.

In the final session session we will upload our photos and learn some powerful editing tools which will make your pictures even more breathtaking!

Fees are 1200 AED per person.

Includes: 4 X 4 hour sessions (total 16 hours of tuition)

Your course notes and homework projects with example images on disk

Classes take place on a Friday or Saturday afternoon from 2-6pm at the photographer’s studio on Al Wasl Road, Al Manara Area. You will require a DSLR camera to participate in the workshop. Please contact me if you need any advice or assistance.

Photography Tips: Positive and Negative Space

The use of negative space is an often overlooked element of composition. I consider it the most important one, however, and believe that if you can become aware of negative space you will drastically improve your image composition.

In our day-to-day life we generally don’t pay any amount of concentrated attention tothe objects that surround us. We depend upon our mental library of collected symbols to fill in the details of the things we look at without us having to spend much time actually looking. Artist’s and photographer’s obsession is with the act of looking and they are therefore more alive to the elements that make up the objects in our field of vision. Elements such as line, tone, texture, colour and shape… and particularly negative shape. It is easily overlooked element! Positive space is used to describe the solid mass of an object and negative space, the void that surrounds that object.

An object cuts a definite shape in the negative space which is of equal importance in a composition as the object itself. Because we are always thinking in terms of a rectangular frame in photographic composition, we need to be aware of the object or scene’s relationship to the frame, and what shapes are being created by the positive shapes. These shapes can be used very effectively in a composition, but most importantly, it will make your compositions more subtle and deliberate when you consider the relationships between positive and negative .

Negative space defines the boundaries or contours of an object and has a fascinating relationship with positive mass. It can also be used to create a sense of balance and order in your composition when you give equal dominance to the positive and negative space by giving the eye a space to rest. Negative space has a ‘weight’ of it’s own and can be oppressive if it dominates a composition, giving rise to an emotional reaction in the viewer.

In the example below, the negative space is not necessarily apparent in the first image, but when it is given prominence in the second image and the distracting detail of the goblet is removed, it becomes clear that the negative shape created by the contours of the object is actually recognizable as two men facing each other.

When you alternate between looking at the positive and the negative spaces you can feel a ‘switch’ taking place in your brain and it a kind of minor revelation because it is not our usual way of seeing. This is a good way of training yourself to become sensitive to negative space and having a more artistic way of looking at the world around us. You should find, with practice, that you will compose images with more ease and confidence because you are looking in an active, rather than passive manner.

Sharmila Dance Gala

I was thrilled earlier this year to be commissioned by Sharmila Dance to cover their incredible Dance Gala at DUCTAC. It was a fantastic variety show for lovers of dance and an exciting introduction for newcomers to all kinds of styles through street, salsa, classical ballet, contemporary and modern dance. The vibrant energy and attitude of the performers as well as technical precision and diversity was astounding!

Arina and Tony’s wedding

Recent wedding shoot with the lovely Arina and her husband Tony, such a fun couple! Arina’s father in law was not impressed with her choice of cake decor which resulted in some fun photos! There was dancing and lots of merriment at the Marina Yatch Club and it was great to be a part of it, congrats to them both!

Band shoot: Casual Jazz

A band shoot for the group Casual Jazz represented by The Fridge. I found this incredible abandoned park which was overgrown, dusty and unkempt. What a gem! With the sun setting and casting a lovely golden light it was a pleasure shooting this awesome band. You wouldn’t guess this was shot in Dubai! There was one eerie moment when a large flock of big black crows were frightened out of their perches in a nearby skeletal dead tree and they came circling and swooping overhead!

Recent Work: Michael Love Rexen Shoot

I was commissioned to shoot the ever eccentric Danish folk singer Michael Love Rexen (one half of the brains behind Fridge favourites A Key Is A Key) for the Fridge last year and we had an awesome time out in the sun experimenting with capturing Michael falling into the pool… shaking off water in the street and floating. What a nice, creative, fun guy!

Masters: Ansel Adams

It would be a crime to embark on an overview of the great masters of photography without including Ansel Adams among the top three. Not only as inspiration for those landscape photography enthusiasts out there, but for anyone with an interest or passion for the art of black and white photography.

His incredible landscape photographs are works of art and for a beginner the are a master class in composition, exposure, and balancing tonal values in a black and white medium.

Adams believed in the importance of visualising the image before capturing it on film, seeing it in your minds eye as a final composition, and this is evident in all his work, in how balanced and harmonious the composition and distribution of tonal values, creating striking contrasts, and fascinating positive and negative shapes out of the natural landscape within his frame.

His work is best described as expressing the sublime. More than just beautiful, his landscapes evoke awe and wonder and have a sense of overwhelming grandeur.

Recent work: Maternity Shoot

Some of my recent work includes a maternity shoot for Mouna Abassy and her gorgeous family. We had a fun two hours of posing with the cute little man – impressive work for a new born! I am particularly enamoured with the shot of grandpa with his grandchild it captures such a feeling of pride and love and astonishment in the intimate portrait. Enjoy the shots!
